SKINFLICK
Skinflick have a singer called Sic Kitten (actually called Toby but he specifically asks us not to mention this) and a drummer called Stoat Of Hate, which is a good start. And they want to be The Stooges, which is even better. That they manage this rather badly with little consideration for the rudiments of songwriting, singing or musicianship merely compounds their appeal. Actually this is probably far more in keeping with the original spirit of The Stooges than most of their copyists. First track, ‘Break It Out On You’, is a direct copy of ‘Dirt’ as it doubtless sounded at first rehearsal, while ‘There Was A Time’ churns and grumbles in suitably grubby fashion, with lots of gruff shouting and a two-note bassline. After that everything sort of tumbles into an abyss of tuneless noise but we comfort ourselves with the thought that maybe the band have just taken a few minutes off from their musical duties to pick a fight with a local biker gang. It’s what Iggy would have wanted.
