Fierce Panda stars Twist have been confirmed as the headline band for the Saturday night of the Charlbury Riverside Festival which runs over the weekend of the 17th and 18th of June in Mill Field, Charlbury. The free festival is now in its third year and again brings together an eclectic two-day bill of local and national bands. The Saturday bill, which runs from 1pm through to 11pm features the Birmingham-based all-girl punkers, often compared favourably to early Hole, along with local stars Narco, The Samurai Seven, Canola and Whispering Bob, as well as half a dozen more bands. The Sunday runs from midday through to 8pm and is headlined by 70s glam-rockers Scarlet. They are supported by acoustic trancers Sellout, local troubadour Osprey, punk-reggae types Retrogen and African drummers Da Da Drum, plus a host of other acts, ranging from folk through to blues and country rock. As well as the music there will be a licensed bar and food stalls as well as free camping. The organisers are asking people to come by public transport since Charlbury, being a small town, is unable to cope with large amounts of traffic. A regular train service runs from Oxford and Charlbury station is only two minutes walk from the festival site. In other local festival news, the line-up for July’s Truck Festival, at Hill Farm in Steventon, is almost complete. The two day festival, which is organised by brothers Robin and Joe Bennet from Whispering Bob and helps to raise money for Amnesty International and Helen House Hospice, runs over the weekend of July 22nd and 23rd and is headlined by Twist’s Fierce Panda labelmates, Seafood, whose blistering take on Sonic Youth and The Pixies recently saw them sell out the Point. This year’s Truck Festival has an increased capacity from last year, with room for 4,000 and an even wider range of live music and DJs on offer. Joining Seafood on the main stage on Saturday are Bedford’s twisted rockers The Pecadiloes, The Samurai Seven, Whispering Bob, Narco and local rap-metal faves Black Candy. The Sunday is headlined by The Four Storeys and awesome Scottish pop weirdos Dawn of the Replicants, playing a rare one-off gig. Joining them on the Truck Stage are Murry the Hump, hot new local doomsters Vigilance Black Special and ex-Inspiral Carpets singer Tom Hingley. In addition to the main stage there is a second stage in the barn. On Saturday this is hosted by Chaos Theory and features a left-field bill that includes Dawn of the Replicants spin-off Pluto Monkey - recently signed to Shifty Disco - The Klyvz and Rareforms. On the Sunday the barn falls into the hands of local hardcore club The Club That Cannot Be Named. Headliners are Jor, who are backed up by the heavyweight likes of Raging Speedhorn, Medulla Nocte and the mighty Mindsurfer. In addition to all this Saturday night sees a dance tent which features various local and national DJs, including a set from Lab-4’s Adam Newman. Tickets for Truck 2000 are on sale now priced £10 (until July 1st) from the Zodiac box office, Polar Bear Records, Modern music in Abingdon, The Music Box in Wallingford and Baby John’s in Didcot as well as online from www.oxfordmusic.net. As with the Charlbury festival, there is free camping and a licensed bar and food stalls. For more information call Robin on 07979 646815. There will be full line-up details in next month’s Nightshift. And as if all that weren’t enough, the line-up for Event 2000 at Didcot Football Club is coming together. The one day event takes place on Saturday 19th of August and runs from midday through to midnight. Headliners for the main stage are likely to be The Animalhouse and The Egg, with an acoustic set from Unbelievable Truth also to be confirmed. Also on the main stage are Black Candy, Two-Tone legends The Selecter, and a dozen other local bands. A second stage which runs until 5.30pm includes bands like Headcount, Interseed and Paper Sun while the Snakebite City stage, organised by the Bluefire record label that releases the regular Snakebite City compilation albums, features Jor, The Samurai Seven and skatecore heroes The Flying Medallions amongst others. Event 2000 is being organised to raise money for local school and youth club music projects. As with Truck we’ll be printing a more complete line-up for the event nearer the time.
