CHewy
CHEWY
Monday 25th
Bullingdon Arms

Even as mainland Europe’s pop innovation outstrips the UK’s in so many respects, Switzerland remains that quietest of backwaters. Except for Chewy that is. Laussanne’s geeky noisenicks look like another party of hopelessly lost backpackers but speak the international language of Sonic Youth. It’s not all rehashed grunge-pop noise, though. In Greg Wicky - a Joe 90 lookalike with a razor-sharp, self-effacing wit - they’ve got a cutely malevolent songwriter and you’ll hear such sweet influences and Teenage Fanclub, Dinosaur Jr and Placebo in the mix; always managing to dump a giant lump of distorted mayhem in there just when you didn’t expect it. What ultimately makes Chewy irresistible is their pure, unjaded punk-rock attitude. That alone is good enough reason for growing up beyond the boundaries of what’s considered cool.
