Tuesday 26th The Zodiac Hailing from Aberystwyth and fronted by the improbably-named Davey Crockett, The Crocketts have followed a similar path to The Levellers - whom they supported on tour last year - by taking traditional folk music and punking it up ‘til it smelt dirty. Like The Levellers, too, they’ve gradually built up a following despite music press indifference, mainly on the back of constant touring and playing all the festivals that indie wimps think aren’t cool enough. Their last album, `The Great Brain Robbery’, released earlier in the Summer continued their reinvention of the Waterboys’ songbook, but with nasty guitar bits and more shouting layered on top for extra punk rock effect. Elsewhere they explore the wide open spaces of the American Midwest and generally put on a live-wire show for people who want to drink copious amounts of strong beer and throw themselves and their friends repeatedly against the nearest wall. Davey himself isn’t averse to self-injury in the pursuit of visceral, bar-room brawl-style entertainment, so Belle & Sebastian fans might want to stay at home. |
