Coldplay
COLDPLAY
Tuesday 3rd
Brookes University

Like Travis before them, Coldplay have sort of slipped into the national consciousness and become a household name. You know, like proper pop stars. Except that, like Travis, Coldplay seem a bit too nice to be pop stars. Somehow crack habits and groupie abuse don’t seem to be on he horizon. Instead, songs like ‘Shiver’ and particularly ‘Yellow’ - a bloody great pop song, just in case you hadn’t noticed and destined to be one of the best Top 40 singles of the year - confirm the supremacy of Radio 2-friendly indie. So your parents can feel isolated and misunderstood with you now. Anyway, from four college lads with an affection for Jeff Buckley, playing to their manager’s sloany mates down at the Point 18 months ago, to their current status as champions of sensitive but commercial guitar pop, via an NME-sponsored tour, it’s all been pretty rosy on the Coldplay front. The chart-topping antics of debut album ‘Parachutes’ suggests things are only going to get better. Live Coldplay have rarely threatened to set the world on fire; they’ve always been a bit boring to be honest. But with fame comes renewed confidence and maybe Chris Martin and co. will come out of their shells a little. They never said they were here to change the world; they just want to make it a prettier place.
